Wilderness areas on Svalbard arkipel

DATASET

The data set shows areas on Svalbard that are not directly affected by major infrastructure developments. Such areas are located one kilometer or more as the crow flies away from nature encroachments such as large buildings, roads, marked tracks, land fills, communication installations, etc. The wilderness areas are located five kilometers or more as the crow flies, away from such interventions. Intervention data that forms the basis for the maps is mainly obtained from the Norwegian Polar Institute (N-100 map data and aerial photos), as well as from some recent oblique photos. The data set also shows which areas have had their intervention status changed as a result of new interventions and/or nature restoration in the period 1990-2022.
